Dr. William Pickard, successful entrepreneur and founder of the Pickard Business Scholarship, visited Grand Valley to speak on his new book, “Seven Principles of Entrepreneurship.” Dr. Pickard is an expert on overcoming barriers to success created by age, race, gender, education, and income. On Wednesday, October 5, he shared the seven key factors that led to his success in business over the last 35 years. In attendance were this year’s three Pickard Business Scholars, [pictured on cover] Leticia Franco-Steele, Class of 2020; Hannah Mousigian, Class of 2020; and Jaylene Salas, Class of 2019.

business, he turned to Grand Valley first. Pickard served on Grand Valley’s Board of Trustees for 11 years and is now giving back to help the students. He encourages Grand Valley students to take

advantage of what is offered through academic advising, career counseling, hands-on learning experiences…all of these tools will help set them on the path to success. Jaylene has taken full advantage of the

programs and services at GVSU by being a part of the Trio Student Service program and meeting with an advisor four times per year, as well as meeting with tutors and her professors. Thanks in part to the help she has received,

Jaylene has her vision. “I see my Laker Effect as being an inspiration to the generation coming after me, specifically my high school, Detroit Cristo Rey. I want students to know that hard work pays off. I plan to use my business degree and work for a large company…and ultimately make it all the way to the top.”
