Food Sample Preparation Products Help Food Microbiology Labs Increase Effi ciency

The Seward Stomacher® 400 EVO and accompanying Stomacher® 400 ECO bags enable food microbiology laboratories to operate in a highly efficient way, with the likelihood of significant cost savings.

The Seward Stomacher 400 EVO laboratory blender combines the gold standard attributes of the original Stomacher 400 with improved, easy-to- use features, including a one-touch bag loading system. Providing maximum performance while minimising noise, the Seward Stomacher® 400 EVO used with the associated Stomacher® 400 ECO sample preparation bags, can save up to 25% on consumables. As ECO bags use significantly less plastic than standard bags, this reduces waste, making them both economical and eco-friendly, which is ideal for ISO14001 laboratories.

In addition to reducing stress and disruption to other laboratory work enabled through efficient and near silent blending, the Seward Stomacher 400 EVO is also very easy to clean. The new blender’s front cover and strike plate can be removed facilitating access to the paddle chamber and detachable paddles for simple and thorough cleaning. The removable drip tray also saves cleaning time in day-to-day use.

Insterprep sachets, from Seward’s new pre-weighed media range, contain instantly-soluble sterile media granules which are ready-to-use by simply adding to the user’s own Stomacher bags with sterile water and then blended immediately. As there is no need to wait for the media granules to dissolve before blending, samples can be prepared in under a minute. Like Insterprep media bags, Insterprep sachets can be selected depending on the quantity and type of media required for a particular protocol.

Simple, Quick Way to Reduce The Risk of Food Product Recalls

A quick look at the ‘Food alerts’ section of the Food Standards Agency’s website shows how many products are recalled. Labcell offers the latest AquaLab Series 4TE water activity analyser as a simple, quick and cost-effective way to obtain quantitative data that provides an invaluable indicator of safety and quality of both ingredients and food products.

For producers of ingredients and food products, the robust AquaLab Series 4TE water activity analyser is a simple, quick and cost-effective way of measuring the water activity in a quality assurance laboratory, goods-in inspection department, storage area or alongside the production line. An AquaLab can be used for checking ingredients, end products or as a critical control point within a HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) programme.

The AquaLab Series 4TE not only gives laboratory-grade results, but is also remarkably easy to use by non-specialists, generating results in just five minutes or less (the average read time is 2.5 minutes.

With a measurement range of 0.030 to 1.000 aw, most ingredients and food products can be analysed, whether they are in the form of powders, pastes, liquids or solids. Accuracy is +/-0.003 aw and repeatability is +/-0.001 aw.

One of the ways in which the AquaLab Series 4TE achieves accurate, repeatable readings, even in warm production areas or cool storage areas, is the built-in temperature equilibration; users can set the sample temperature to anything from 15 to 50ºC, then the analyser maintains that temperature for the duration of the test. Subsequent analyses are undertaken at the same temperature to ensure repeatability.

For analysing samples containing volatiles, Labcell offers the AquaLab Series 4TEV. This instrument is identical to the Series 4TE in most respects, but it benefits from an additional hygroscopic polymer capacitance sensor for analysing samples containing propylene glycol, ethanol and other volatiles, giving an accuracy of +/-0.015 aw.

Up to 8,000 data points can be stored securely on the instrument and, for every measurement and calibration, the instrument logs the user, date and time. Data is recorded and stored in compliance with the requirements of the FDA’s 21 CFR Part 11 rule regarding electronic records and signatures.

Rapid and High-Sensitivity Animal Species Test Systems Available

Greiner Bio-One presents CarnoCheck high sensitive and the CarnoRapid quick test, two products that result from the continuing development of the well-established CarnoCheck DNA test kit. These two new tests can rapidly and reliably identify up to eight types of animal.

The CarnoRapid test is the perfect system for small laboratories in meat-producing companies, for example, who need a reliable test for incoming goods. The innovative lateral-flow DNA chip can detect eight different animal types in raw, cooked or conserved foodstuffs down to a weight proportion of between 0.01 and 1%. The CarnoRapid kit contains all the components for the quick and easy extraction of samples, a Multiplex PCR Mastermix for reproducing the species-specific DNA and 48 lateral-flow DNA chips. Once the DNA has been reproduced, the analysis procedure on the chip takes just ten minutes and can be conducted by even the smallest of laboratories with minimal equipment. The qualitative evidence of all eight species is given through hybridisation and dying of the PCR products on the CarnoRapid chip. A positive result is shown by a visible line on the CarnoRapid chip for each species detected.

CarnoCheck high sensitive enables the highly sensitive qualitative detection of eight animal types in raw, cooked or conserved foodstuffs. Pork, beef, sheep, goat and chicken can be detected down to a weight proportion of 0.01%, and horse, donkey and turkey down to 0.1%. The reliability of the analysis has been tested using a wide range of products including sausages, soups, stock cubes, cheese, yoghurt, butter, curd cheese, lasagne, cat food and dog food.

CarnoCheck high sensitive is primarily aimed at large food-testing laboratories specialising in animal species testing with medium to high throughput. Six or twelve analyses can be carried out at the same time on one chip using microarray analysis. Each microarray contains several species-specific probes and a sophisticated system of internal and external checks that make CarnoCheck high sensitive an extremely reliable detection system. The automatic digital analysis and report generation feature provides even greater product reliability, as this virtually eliminates the possibility of false-positive and false- negative results.
