Getting your home ready for winter B

UILDINGS that are well maintained and kept in good condition will generally be able to cope with

most weather conditions during the winter. Here are a few hints and tips to help

you look after your home during the cold winter months:

• If you leave your home unattended, leave the heating on low (around 15ºc)

• Tell us if you are going to be away for a while, by maybe providing an

alternative contact telephone number for emergencies.

• Know where the water shut-off valve (stopcock) is to isolate the supply in an emergency

• Lag outside water taps to prevent them freezing and pipes bursting

• In severe cold weather open the loft hatch to warm the loft space and keep your pipes from freezing.

• All pipes in your loft should be

insulated to minimise the risk of freezing in extreme weather

• Plumbing joints can degrade through time, so keep an eye out for any hint of water.

Burst and frozen pipes and escape of

water are some of the most common problems in winter. If you have any repairs needed, it’s best to get them done before the cold weather hits. If anything goes wrong, our helpful advisors are here to help 24/7.
