As it casts an eye to hosting the prestigious 2018 Arizona Amateur, Tonto Verde’s little-known secret is that it is essentially a private club — 80 percent of the tee times come from members — yet it enthusiastically welcomes the public.

The Peaks (above), named for its jaw-dropping vistas of the Four Peaks, is a Gary Panks/David Graham design that opened in 1993. The Ranch (left) references the nearby Box Bar Ranch, a working cattle ranch on lush grazing land fronting the Verde River. Panks crafted this one on his own in 1999.
