Staggs earns Mayfair Award

H

is first year of AGA competition turned out to be a fruitful one for Blaine Staggs of Tucson, who won one title, posted four other top-five

finishes and captured the Mayfair Award for lowest weighted scoring average. Staggs, 30, finished with an adjusted

average of 70.87, which edged out Bryan Hoops at 71.25. “I’m ecstatic,” Staggs said. “I was hoping

that I might win some type of award and I came close on the season points, so this is very rewarding.” Staggs won the Open Division of the

Southern Amateur, finished second in the Northern Amateur and SanTan Amateur, was third in the Arizona Public Links and tied for third in the Arizona Four-ball. Aside from AGA events, he also won the Chandler City Championship in 2015 and took third in the Tucson City Championship.

BLAINE STAGGS A native of San Diego, Staggs gave up his

pro status after PGA Tour Qualifying School in 2012. He works as a loan officer with Nova Homes and said he was thrilled to get back into competition as an amateur in 2015. “I was super excited to get my amateur

status back after a couple years of waiting because I love the competition, and it was really nice to get back into it,” he said. “My goal is to be the best amateur golfer in Arizona and I’m really looking forward to more AGA competition. “My job restricts me from playing in some

USGA events, but it’s a goal to play in the Amateur and Mid-Amateur, so I’ll try to find a way to make that happen.” n
