Chamber leads the way for award wins

Anjum Khan, director of the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce (ABCC), led a host of accolades for the Birmingham business community when she won national recognition in the English Asian Business Awards. And Wow Zone, run by ABCC president Qasim

Majid, won the ‘Digital Business of the Year’ title along with several other Birmingham business people. They included Paul Thandi, chief executive of

the NEC Group, who won the ‘Corporate Leader of the Year’ title, and Awan Marketing chief executive Nasir Awan, who picked up ‘International Business of the Year’. Anjum was named ‘Woman of the Year’ at a

ceremony at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel. The awards were created to honour the

determination, hard work and personal achievements of English Asian business people at the forefront of their industries.

Mountain challenge raises vital funds for charity

Workers from top ten UK accountant Mazars, which has an office in Birmingham, are celebrating after spending hours climbing Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales. The climb was all for a good cause, with funds

being raised for Macmillan Cancer Support. The climbers were from Mazars Muslim Network, and it was their first fundraising effort. Mazars tax manager Ruzwan Boota said: “We

are all proud that we were able to raise funds for such a great cause – supporting those who are suffering with cancer as well as their families. They have much larger mountains that they climb each and every day. “As a firm, Mazars is a strong promoter of

diversity and inclusion in all of its shapes and forms, and without its support and encouragement, we would not have been able to organise this climb and raise the funds that we did.”

Paul Faulkner, chief executive of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC), of which the ABCC is part, said: “The two awards are a huge accolade for the whole of the ABCC and the Asian community in Birmingham.

‘The work of the ABCC is vital in a city as diverse as Birmingham’

“Anjum has been instrumental in making the

ABCC the most meaningful Asian business organisation in the country and fully deserves this honour. “The work of the ABCC is vital in a city as

diverse as Birmingham and it brings together a myriad of cultures working together for the whole community. Congratulations also to Qasim, whose leading international digital marketing agency is based in Birmingham.”

Eid event success

The Asian Business Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) has celebrated Eid al-Fitr, or ‘Feast of Breaking the Fast’, at a networking event. Eid is celebrated around the world as it

signifies the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. The event, held at West Bromwich Albion’s

Hawthorns ground, saw more than 250 business people celebrate the event. Attendees also watched the World Cup semi-final between England and Croatia. Speaking after the event Qasim Majid, ABCC

president, said: “It never ceases to amaze me that every year the ABCC Eid event grows in numbers and becomes even more vibrant. “The challenge this year was very unique in that the chosen date fell on the same day as the

World Cup semi-final, with England playing Croatia. We therefore decided to work this in our favour and have an Eid Celebration event coupled with giving our attendees the opportunity to watch the match at the event. “The combination of networking, football and

Indian food was a real success.” Capital Air Ambulance and NA Consulting

sponsored the event and delivered presentations, alongside ABCC patron Mazars. Naeem Arif, managing director of NA

Consulting, said: “This celebration was another excellent event organised by the ABCC. It was great to see such a variety of businesses attend the event, especially some new faces. “It speaks volumes about the ABCC's profile and reach in the business community.”
