Green light: Pebble Mill project can go ahead

An application to expand a medical facility in the Edgbaston Medical Quarter by 4,000 sq m has been given the green light. Birmingham City Council’s planning committee have

approved the application from Calthorpe Estates to increase their Building 4 proposals at Pebble Mill to 9,000 sq m from the original 5,000 sq m vision that was first approved back in 2014. The planning committee granted outline planning

permission following their deferment for further consultation and technical examinations of the first submission last month.

Green light: this Pebble Mill project can finally go ahead

The proposed building on Plot 4 of the former BBC

Pebble Mill site is to be positioned between Circle Health’s new private hospital and rehabilitation centre, and the Birmingham NHS Dental Hospital on Pebble Mill’s main Mill Pool Way. When complete, Pebble Mill will offer more than 500,000 sq ft of world-class medical and healthcare facilities, in addition to new food and beverage space and community access sporting amenities.

Boutique venue adds 14 rooms

Cocktail bar and boutique hotel The Edgbaston has secured planning for an additional 14 new bedrooms. Work has already started on the

construction of the new wing, to be built next door to the current hotel on Highfield Road on the Calthorpe Estate in the heart of Edgbaston Village - and the rooms are expected to open towards the end of this year. Stuart Insall, co-owner of The

Edgbaston, said: “We wanted to be sure that the two buildings will blend seamlessly so the new rooms will follow an art deco theme, while retaining period features such as sash windows and high ceilings, which will also make the most of the natural light. “Since opening four years ago,

the hotel has been occupied 95 per cent of the time. We never like to say no to our guests, which was our thinking behind the expansion.” Natasha Walkden, sales and

marketing manager for Calthorpe Estates, said: “The Edgbaston is a family-owned, award-winning business, and is run by two brothers whose aim is to show the world that Edgbaston, Birmingham and the Midlands are places worth visiting.”
