HS2 firm makes key appointment

LM, the joint venture of Laing O’Rourke and J. Murphy & Sons Limited, has appointed Garry O’Dwyer (pictured) as its new commercial leader. LM is currently delivering the

enabling works programme for the northernmost section of HS2 Phase One, which represents approximately 80km of the new high-speed line’s route. Garry will be

responsible for leading all strategic commercial aspects of LM’s business operations, and will be based at the firm’s offices in Birmingham. Garry has extensive experience,

including the London 2012 Olympic Games and Crossrail projects, as well as supporting Laing O’Rourke’s Design for Manufacture & Assembly (DfMA) strategy and offsite solutions business. Garry said: “Having grown up in

the local area and seen at first hand the economic benefits that major infrastructure projects can create for communities I’m delighted to be supporting the delivery of HS2 in the West Midlands and the benefits it will bring to the region.”

Engineering the future: How the new school will look

University awards £46.5m engineering contract

A £46.5m contract to deliver a new home for the University of Birmingham’s School of Engineering has been secured by Willmott Dixon. The School of Engineering was

established in January 2016 and includes the disciplines of civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electronic, electrical and systems engineering. The striking new building will

house both the School of Engineering and UKRRIN Rail Digital Systems Innovation Centre (DSIC).

Nick Gibb, deputy managing

director for Willmott Dixon in the Midlands, said: “The new School of Engineering provides a clear visual statement for the university. “It will be driving interest in the

STEM subjects, something that we will be supporting ourselves through the creation of opportunities for work placements.” The relocation of the School of

Engineering is part of the university’s masterplan to bring schools together on the campus to create an engineering hub.

Daniel Holmes, of the UoB, said:

“This new building represents a celebration of engineering and will be a centrepiece of our new engineering hub. “The ongoing collaborative

relationship that we have with Willmott Dixon gives us significant confidence that they will deliver this landmark building. “The School of Engineering will

be delivered with collaboration between the university and industry, enabling research and teaching excellence to be celebrated.”
