PRESSURE TOLERANT LITHIUM SULFUR BATTERY PACK TO BEGIN OPEN WATER TRIALS IN AUGUST

A revolutionary battery pack currently in development by a consortium headed by Steatite Ltd will commence the final stages of testing in August when it will undertake ‘real world’ trials powering an autonomous vehicle in open water.

Developed by Steatite in conjunction with Oxis Energy, MSubs and The National Oceanography Centre, the Lithium Sulfur (Li-S) battery pack is the culmination of 18 months of extensive development and testing.

Designed to withstand the immense pressure and low temperatures at depths of 6,000m with minimal decrease in performance, the battery pack will provide a number of benefits to Marine Autonomous Systems (MAS), including increased vehicle speed and endurance, greater payload capacity, improved safety, and reduced operating costs when compared to current Lithium-ion battery technology. In addition, the chemistry used in Li-S cells is considerably more environmentally friendly than that of other cell chemistries, and can withstand 100% energy discharge without damage.

A major aspect of the project has been the development of Steatite’s all new Battery Management System (BMS). This ground breaking BMS and associated charger technology is pressure tolerant and will also be capable of use with all other mainstream battery chemistries.

In order to replicate different demands, underwater vehicle producer and consortium partner MSubs will be overseeing the open water submersible trials. The battery pack will be fitted to the Deepbots UUV (Unmanned Underwater Vehicle). This testing will demonstrate the performance and benefits of the Li-S battery

pack in a marine environment.

Following the trials, the technology will be made production capable, capitalising on Steatite’s custom build capabilities. This will enable Li-S battery packs to be seamlessly integrated into a range of diverse applications as far reaching as energy storage, unmanned and autonomous land and marine systems.
