Continuing on the road to success
Following the appointment of their first female president, Lisa Pogson, last November, Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce are working full steam ahead to promote confidence within their members and the wider community.
After gaining confidence in her own achievements as Airmaster Air Conditioning’s joint managing director, Lisa is hoping to instill confidence in the Chamber members based on the future economic prospects of both Rotherham and Barnsley.
Leaving school at 16 with a handful of average GCSEs, Lisa went onto an administrative Youth Training Scheme before working her way up to resources director at Swallownest’s Airmaster with a Masters in management.
As President of BR Chamber, her two-year plan as leader looks at the core business in South Yorkshire, engaging with other businesses to share skills, resources and networking in order to face the change and growth ahead of us. Not just about large nationwide projects such as HS2, Lisa and the transport forum have been working alongside both councils, the Highways
Agency and South Yorkshire Transport to look at smaller, localised issues and ideas such as the new Tram Train link from Sheffield to Rotherham and Parkgate.
As development is well on track for the new line to open next year, Lisa and the Chamber have also looked at tackling problems on our roads to improve traffic flow between Rotherham and Barnsley.
To help both businesses and commuters who often rely on roads for business to prosper, they have been identifying little problems such as troublesome traffic lights, confusing road marking and junction improvements to help things go smoothly for all.
Similarly, platinum BR Chamber member, Mexborough Business Centre, have helped many new businesses on the road to relocation with their exceptional business facilities at the former
DWDT staff Jo Ward and Joanne Ainley with MBC owner Peter Newman
Mexborough Grammar School.
Moving from Conisborough, Doncaster West Development Trust took new office space at MBC in April having been at their old site since 1993. Offering opportunities and support to coalfield communities and those particularly affected by the pit closures, DWDT provide free advice for everything from debt management and money advice to help with job searching and CV writing to improve the lives of those affected by hardship and unemployment.
After looking for accessible and well-equipped office space as a base for their work in the community, the facilities on offer at MBC fit the bill perfectly, with the team settling in well with owner Peter Newman and his existing vendors.
