Spring 2017 FPCA Announces New Member Benefit at 2017 Mid-Winter Conference

As part of FPCA President Chief Butch Arenal’s key initiative this year, the FPCA Career Center was launched during the 2017 Mid-Winter Conference. This online resource will provide you information on minimum requirements for chief of police positions, guidance on applying for command posi- tions, and templates for cover letters, resumes and references.

We are also developing a training session that will provide members interested in career advance- ment the opportunity to practice interviewing, to speak with City Managers, and to have their re- sumes and cover letters reviewed.

This career center is accessible through the Members Only section on our website. Here you’ll be able to access the following:

Membership Guide to Minimum Qualifications Here you will find a list of minimum qualifications for a chief of police at a local police department, university police departments, airport police departments, and school district police departments.

Instructions to the Applicant/Templates This section will give you a starting point for creating a cover letter, a resume, and a list of refer- ences. The committee members developed tips to consider when applying for a job (such as “do your homework”), and we’ve offered templates for the documents.

Two-Day Seminar The final part of this initiative is the establishment of a two-day seminar for members to come have their resumes reviewed, participate in mock interviews, gain tips from current City Managers and more.

We want to thank the subcommittee responsible for creating this content: Dr. Jim Sewell (chair), Chief Brett Railey, Chief Jerry Monahan, Chief Dennis Jones and Chief Jim Gabbard.
