GHANA MITIGATES POWER OUTAGES WITH INDEPENDENT GENSETS

Power outages, popularly known as dumsor [locally, this means ‘on/off’] are imminent in Ghana as the power sector is on the verge of losing 600 megawatts of generation last month (February 2017). This is due to a complex web of mishandled financial obligations and other challenges confronting the national generator, the Volta River Authority (VRA).

The power supply deficit is occurring mainly at the Aboadze power enclave in the Western Region. The VRA’s Takoradi

Thermal Plant Stations

(TAPCO 1&2) have already registered an output reduction, with 330MW of power, as the contractor for its long- term service agreement (LTSA) has refused to carry out major inspection because of a US$2 million debt already owed to it.

The Takoradi International Company (TICO) has also had to reduce its power output from 330MW to 155MW. A third generator, T3, has not been operational for several years now. This leaves only one plant, AMERI, which is designed to use only gas.

Bank, the Capital Bank, as well as the PAK MICRO FINANCE COMPANY LTD, one of Ghana’s leading microfi- nance companies.

Between February 3rd - 17th, 2017, the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant will get no natural gas from the Jubilee Field. The plant will not be able to generate any power for Ghana’s national electricity grid. In order to mitigate the impact of power supply failures, many local companies have begun using gensets at their facilities, ensuring an uninterrupted power supply for their operations.

A fleet of gensets has recently arrived at the facilities of Johan Marby Ltd, INMESOL's genset distributor. Some of the companies supplied by Johan Marby Ltd include the Sahel-Sahara
