CHARACTERS

From the trailer, the audience can envision Miss Sloane, the eponymous character, as a strong, independent female lobbyist, who knows extensively on how to succeed at her job and how to beat and manipulate her opponents. This plays well into the film, since this leads to her becoming more confident and powerful. As she looks towards the camera and gives a monologue, this shows how important she will be and that she is the central aspect of the film.

Other characters which are shown throughout the trailer are either Miss Sloane’s allies or rivals. These people will aid her or destroy her in the effort to ending gun violence in US, which she believes is an important issue and should be enforced. One of the rivals against Miss Sloane says that they “are armed” while showing a gun mannerism towards her. This creates tension among both the rivals and allies of Miss Sloane, that many people are willing to do whatever it takes to be the victors in the decision of gun control.

From the brief dialogue used throughout the trailer, we are able to detect that Miss Sloane is a prominent figure among Washington D.C. and that many fear her. Quotes like, “She’s your enemy now” and “You’re a piece of work Elizabeth” show this fear and angst against her. Miss Sloane says “I was hired to win” and “I use whatever resource I have”, which further shows how the title character is forceful and determined to win.

With the film being a thriller, there are many actions done by the characters which are meant to cause trouble or psychological torture for their rivals. For example, one of her rivals insinuate on “annihilating” her meaning to “reduce to nothing”, which shows the lengths they are willing to go. Miss Sloane says “this is more important than my career”, enforcing the rivalry between the two opposing sides to gun control in the film.
