[FEATURES] 27 | 445 LIFTS TO BUILD ONE MASSIVE SHIP
Te second ship in the Ford class, aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) was contracted for construction with a budget roughly 20% smaller than its predecessor. Clearly this called for profound rethinking of the build process. As a result, where the last Nimitz class ship required about 600 dock lifts, and the Ford about 500, this ship is built in larger pieces at a much higher state of completion to make the job more efficient.

Peerless Industrial Group celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2017. A 27 year old wholesale fruit salesman from Minneapolis named Joseph B. Bambenek founded the Peerless Chain Company along with his two brothers Dominic (Dick) and Al. Early production – where chains were forged by hand – took place in a former butcher shop in Winona, MN. By 1920 the business was investing in equipment and getting on the road to a century of growth and innovation.

ON THE COVER: One of the 445 lifts to be performed by Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, in the construction of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) presently underway. That 550 acre facility, employing about 20,000 people, is the sole builder of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. This is the second ship in the Ford class, and is slated for completion in 2020 with final commissioning by the Navy in 2022.
