Dr Dan Poulter MP
AN important part of my job as an MP is to find out the views of residents in our area and in order to do this I send out regular sur- veys. I have recently published the results of a far-ranging sur- vey I have carried out with local residents, as part of the ongoing consultation about road and other important infrastructure improvements related to the construction of Sizewell C power station. I wrote to resi- dents of Wickham Market, Hacheston and Marlesford ask- ing for their views and com- ments about the need for improvements to the A12 relat- ing to the building of Sizewell C power station. I was delighted that over 250 people took the time to reply to my survey. Key findings from the survey include: 86% of people sur- veyed supported a full dual car- riageway bypass for the four villages of Marlesford, Little Glemham, Stratford St Andrew and Farnham; 64% use the A12 on a daily basis; 56% of respon- dents opposed a proposed Park and Ride facility to be located at Lower Hacheston. As many readers will know,
the A12 is a key road route for East Suffolk and it’s long been
recognised that it needs substan- tial improvements in order to cope with the additional traffic that construction of the new Sizewell C power station will bring. With high volumes of traffic already experienced on the A12 from tourists during the summer months, the building of Sizewell C will bring more lor- ries and more congestion. These results show the
strength of support for a four vil- lages bypass. The communities of Marlesford, Little Glemham and Wickham Market have spo- ken with a conclusive voice and together with my fellow MPs, Dr Therese Coffey and Peter Aldous, I will continue to work closely with Suffolk Coastal District Council and Suffolk County Council to ensure that EDF are pushed to deliver the very best deal possible for much needed road improvements to the A12 when Sizewell is built. A dual carriageway bypass is badly needed, and it is important that EDF recognise the impor- tance of the four villages bypass to the success of the Sizewell project. I am looking forward to being
out and about in Suffolk to enjoy the wide range of events which
are starting to pop up, not to mention stocking up on the fabu- lous local produce. I always buy my food and drink locally to support our local businesses wherever possible. It never ceases to amaze me the sheer diversity that we have right here on our door step – from locally produced cheeses and meats, to cordials, cider, beer and wine, and sauces, preserves and pick- les, all grown, packaged and produced so creatively right in Suffolk. The success of these businesses is vital to our strong rural economy and I think we all have a part to play in ensuring that we think local and buy local whenever we can. There is so much great work going on here already to educate our children and young people on the impor- tance of not only eating well – a healthy and balanced diet, but also eating locally and season- ally. This is vitally important in reducing the number of miles our food travels before it reaches our plate and of course, fresh produce that’s in season always tastes so much better. I am also a great supporter of
our local farmers and regularly meet with the NFU and the farm- ing community; as we look to negotiate the very best deal pos- sible for our farmers as we embark upon the Brexit negotia- tions, I will certainly be doing my very best to ensure that Suf- folk is at the forefront of those important conversations. BENTWATERS COLD WAR MUSEUM
THE Bentwaters Cold War Mu- seum will be opening its doors for 2017 on Sunday 2nd April and has become a popular attrac- tion for visitors to the Suffolk coastal area and for those inter- ested in aviation and military installations previously denied access to the public. The museum is based in the
United States Air Force (USAF) hardened command post on the former Bentwaters airbase which closed after the withdrawal of the USAF in 1993 and is believed to be the only such building open to the public in the UK and Europe. Run by volunteers from the
Bentwaters Aviation Society, the building is a large bunker made available to the public to view following three years of work to renovate and refur- bish and opened in 2007. Further information on the society can be found at
www.bentwaters-as.org. uk and for the museum at www.
bcwm.org.uk There is plenty of car parking
space and the museum is suitable for all ages and has the added ben- efit of being an ideal all weather visitor attraction. Plans for 2017 will see air-
frames continue to undergo work to bring them up to museum stan- dard and it is expected some will be completed by the end of the year. The café and shop continues to be a great success offering light
refreshments and souvenirs and card payment facilities. Following on from the success
of previous years, the museum will continue to open on the first and third Sundays of each month and Bank Holiday Sundays and Mondays, from April until Octo- ber. Included is the return of the Night Live event when the muse- um is opened in the evening and reenactments are held alongside floodlit aircraft, popular with photographers.
