Just Like That! The Tommy Cooper Show

Strictly Burlesque is coming to town

PARISIAN cabaret comes to Suf- folk in March, when Leiston Film Theatre plays host to a one-off special event entitled ‘Strictly Burlesque’. Direct from London’s famous

Café De Paris, the fabulous Folly Mixtures bring their critically acclaimed Burlesque revue to Suf- folk on Friday 31st March, in an evening of sensuality, circus and satire, with eye-catching routines and special guests, guaranteed to enthral and entertain. To many people, Burlesque

FOLLOWING enormous success at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a sixteen-week residency at Lon- don’s Museum of Comedy and numerous appearances on televi- sion, Hambledon Productions bring their acclaimed homage to one of the UK’s best-loved come- dians to the stage of Leiston Film Theatre for one night only on Sat- urday 29th April. Tommy Cooper was a true

comic genius. His impeccable timing, love of slapstick and quick-fire gags made him an international star. Complete with his trademark fez and a platform of misfiring magic, the man is an undisputed icon of live entertain- ment. Commemorating 30 years since his passing, this all-encap- sulating show of magic, music and mirth is the perfect celebra- tion of Tommy’s comedy status and features all of his classic gags, combined with lesser-known gems, lovingly selected from his joke archive and extensive rou- tines. In this acclaimed show, John

Hewer stars as the man in the fez, complete with throaty rasp, haughty laugh and the clumsiness that accompanied those clever conjuring tricks and is looking forward to bringing the show to Suffolk. “People can expect two hours of solid family entertain- ment and plenty of Tommy’s buf- foonery. It’s an honour to bring his timeless sense of mischief to old and new audiences.” he said. The show boasts the support of

the Tommy Cooper estate, with Tommy’s daughter, Vicky, declar- ing it an honour to have her father remembered through the spirit of this particular production and that her father would have loved the fact that he was still bringing laughter into people’s lives 30 years after his death. Critics agree that this show

remains a faithful tribute to Coo- per’s performance and that Hew- er’s talent in re-creating the gags and patter is a pleasure to watch. One of the highlights of the show is an end-of-the-pier rendition of Bob Dylan’s Blowing in the Wind, as only Tommy Cooper could. The show forms part of the

venue’s spring live show pro- gramme, which also includes a Burlesque revue on Friday 31st March and Swing Machine Big Band show on Saturday 27th May. More shows have recently been added to the Film Theatre’s programme for later in the year, including the return of Olly Day and Nigel ‘boy’ Syer with their Laughter Show (October 6th) and Forever in Blue Jeans (November 4th). Just Like That! The Tommy

Cooper Show appears at Leiston Film Theatre on Saturday 29th April at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £12.95 and £10.95 for con- cessions and are now available from the Leiston Film Theatre box office on 01728 830549 or from the venue’s website at: www.leistonfilmtheatre.co.uk

conjures up images of the Moulin Rouge - frilly drawers, fishnet stockings and lingerie, lightly ris- qué dancing girls and lots of sequins, tassels and feathers. Whilst all of these will be on dis- play, the show is both playful and sexy and features a selection of hilarious specialty acts, from magic and comedy, to a bald guy with a big green rubber balloon! The Folly Mixtures have recent-

ly completed a nationwide tour entitled ‘An Evening of Bur- lesque’, which played to packed theatres around the country. The electrifying troupe was nominated for the Best Burlesque Act for three consecutive years at the Lon- don Cabaret Awards and for the Best British Troupe at the First Annual Burlesque Awards. The slick choreography, charm and pizzazz of their set pieces have gained them critical acclaim and a reputation that has made them the busiest act of their kind in the UK. Leiston Film Theatre manager,

Wayne Burns, is looking forward to bringing this show to town. “In the past few years, I’ve seen numerous Burlesque shows; the good, the bad and the ugly and on seeing the Folly Mixture’s bril- liant show, I knew I had to invite them to appear at Leiston Film Theatre. The response from our customers has been very positive and the audience is in for a tongue- in-cheek evening of fun and frol- ics, never before seen at the Film Theatre.” he said. The show is suitable for those

aged 18 and over – couples or large groups, with 10% off for groups of 10 or more. Tickets have been especially popular as Christ- mas and Valentine’s gifts. Strictly Burlesque appears

LIVE at Leiston Film Theatre on Friday 31st March at 7.45pm. Tickets are priced £14.95 and are now available from the box office on 01728 830549 or online at: www.leistonfilmtheatre.co.uk
