Ryan had another which went to the very up-to-date tune of ‘There’ll always be an England!’ Our version went thus:
There’ll always be a Cranwell, Whilst there’s a pint of ale, Wherever there’s a rifle squad Or privilege to curtail. There’ll always be a Cranwell, For Cranwell will not die As long as types like you and me Have still to learn to fly. Red, white and blue – What does it mean to you? No weekend leave Would you believe! But its part of the show! There’ll always be a Cranwell......
Well, it was all good, clean fun. But now we were due to leave Cranwell and
for the first time we were to be separated. Some of our squad went off to prepare for operational duties. My fate was less exciting, if unique. Alone among them, I was destined to become a flying instructor. I still hope it was because I was a good pilot, not just a somewhat elderly one!
