the end of February and I do not have half the things done I was hoping to. I am still inputting ships and have 8,000 done and 9,200 to go. This is actually going well and I should be able to complete a year every two months problem is there are 52 years to go. Sometimes I do need to switch back to tran- scribing newspapers for something diff erent do and stay relatively sane. I am still working in the New Hampshire Gazette for 1794 and the Republican Journal for 1878. As for reading, I need a few more snow storms, but that throws off my on-the-road schedule and I cannot get everywhere I would like to. I did start another great book, “Boston Looks Seaward, the Story of the Port, 1630-1940.” Lots of good information, but where are the references? With the end of the winter comes the

boat shows for me. The fi rst will be the Maine Fishermen’s Forum at the Samoset in Rockport on 2-4 March. I know all three meals are sold out, however I am not sure about the hotel. It should be another big event and that means lots of money for the scholarship fund. For those that have never been here, it is a great time. There are plenty of discussions on the fi sheries, but other topics are covered too. There is a meeting on Saturday morning for lobster boat racing and later in the day the Penobscot Marine Museum will be giving a presentation on the National Fisherman photography collection they are scanning and putting up online. I know that there are some unknowns in the collection and hopefully some of the fi sher- men can shed light on these.

The next show up for me is the Maine

Boatbuilder’s Show, which this year will be out on Warren Avenue in Portland on 24-26 March. A lot of people are unhappy that it is not in those old buildings, as they liked the ambience. However, there were others, mainly exhibitors, who did not like that ambiance. The bottom-line was the buildings were under new management and there were issues that necessitated the promoters to change the venue. They looked at all the possible sites around Portland and this was the only one that had the required space. The new site is at the Portland Sports Complex, which I think could be a great venue. It is relatively new, has a carpeted fl oor, restaurant and side rooms for lectures. There have been questions about parking, but remember parking was no picnic over on the eastern promenade. Now this is not in downtown Portland, but some are still staying downtown and will frequent many of the restaurants and bars. I have opted to stay out at the mall. This is my protest against the downtown hotels and charging $500 a night for the room in the summer. What idiot is going to pay $500 a night for a room in Portland, Maine? Yes, I know the answer, an outer stater! Please come to the new venue as the promoters are working extra hard to make sure this show regains its immense popularity.
