EDITOR’S COMMENT A
s part of its ‘Grow Boating’ initiative, which was launched last year, Royal Phuket Marina is actively promoting sailing in the local area and throughout Thailand. Inspired by
the late King of Thailand, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who introduced sailing to the Thai people, and working closely with the marine leisure industry, the marina has developed a monthly networking platform. This takes place on the first Friday of every month in The Speakeasy Yacht Club at Royal Phuket Marina, attracting key industry players from Thailand and the region to share ideas and help to ‘Grow Boating’ in Thailand. In a commendable example of putting its
money where its mouth is, Royal Phuket Marina has committed to fully-fund the first-ever SV14 boat in Thailand. This is an open sailing craft conceived by Peter Jacops, an inspector and surveyor for small craft and marinas with the International Marine Certification Institute, after he learned that sailing had been dropped from the 2020 Paralympics. Designed specifically for the needs of people with disabilities by Alex Simonis and Marten Voogd of Simonis Voogd
Design, the SV14 can be crewed by either beginners or experienced sailors. Part of a global crowdsourcing project, it is
being built by Disabled Sailing Thailand (www.
disabledsailingthailand.org) and is scheduled to be launched in March, 2017. Speaking about his decision to fund the building
of the SV14 in Thailand, Gulu Lalvani, Chairman of Royal Phuket Marina, said that the marina was very excited to be working with Disabled Sailing Thailand. He added that the design of the boat means it can be easily moved around the country, allowing people with disabilities the chance to enjoy sailing, a sport he loves. The SV14 will provide a platform for anyone who
may wish to compete at Olympic level in the future and design plans are offered free to anybody who wishes to build one and help sailors with disabilities. Royal Phuket Marina is to be congratulated on supporting such a great idea and an innovative way of helping to grow boating for the disabled community.
