Bulldozers are in to clear Grafty Green

PARISH councillors have wel- comed the start of work to clear and redevelop the former garden centre at Grafty Green. The bulldozers have begun knock-

ingdownthe three large glasshouses on the site in Headcorn Road. The garden centre closed in 2015. The site – which is to be renamed Boughton Park – will comprise 5,000 sq ft of offices and 14 fully-serviced self-build plots – allowing buyers to influence their design from a portfo- lio created by award-winning Kent architect Guy Hollaway. Quinn Estates, which bought the

site near Ulcombe nearly three years ago, says nine of the plots have al- ready been reserved. As part of the planning agree-

ment, Quinn Estates will pay £240,000 for affordable housing to be built elsewhere in the borough, make a payment towards localNHS services and give £100,000 to Boughton Malherbe Parish Council. Mark Quinn, managing director of

Quinn Estates, said:“We carried out extensive consultation, listening to what the community wants, to pro-

duce what will be a stunning and sensitively-designed development.” Cllr Robert Turner, chairman of Boughton Malherbe parish council, which includes Grafty Green, said: “We are not only delighted to see work start on the Boughton Park de- velopment, but pleased to have found in Quinn Estates a developer prepared to listen to local opinion.” One issue the parish council was

keen to avoid was any impact drainage from the site would have on surrounding roads, which saw the developer work closely with SouthernWater to resolve. Quinn Estates expects the first homes will be finished by June 2018

and the project as a whole within two years. It will be accessible from Crumps Lane and Headcorn Road. Headcorn borough councillor Cllr Martin Round said: “The start of work on this site is great news for this rural community, not only in de- livering a development that takes ac- count of its location, but will also create much needed local jobs.” Pictured at the site are (from left):
