Harrow pub ‘will bring new life to community’

ULCOMBE villagers will soon be able to make awelcome toast to the return of their local. The beer taps at the village’s Har-

row Innwere turned off in 2005, but now tenants have been appointed and the hope is the pub will be pulling pints by the end of March. The re-birth of the pub has been

the brainchild of four villagers who decided to buy it at auction and put it back in business. A leading force was local fruit farmer CharlesTassell (55), along with his sister Rosemary Casswell, who lives next door to the old ale house. They will be joined by fellow back-

ers, Simon Odan and Richard Sim, and themanyvillagerswhopledged money and support. Charles said: “It’s been really good

fun andwe’ve had so much support for the pub, but when we couldn’t find anyone with the time to run it, we swung plan B into action. We have offered a long lease to a new landlord and landlady who share our ambitions.” The successful applicants, John and Tracey Sinclair, willmove inup-

stairs with their three children and plan to decorate the bar first and then upgrade the kitchen and serve food. They havemanyyears’ experi- ence of running pubs, most recently in Essex. Charles said: “The idea is that the

pub will attractwalkers and cyclists during the day and provide a hub for villagers and community clubs in the evening.” As one of the bellringers at the vil-

lage church, he says his campanol- ogy colleagues will be patronising the premises. UlcombeParish Council chairman

Peter Titchener believes the pub will bring new life back into the village, which lost its last shop and post of- fice some years ago. Hesaid:“We have a very nice pub

in the Pepperbox, about amile and a half away, but The Harrow will be a few hundred yards away. The new tenants seem very nice and pretty mucheveryone thinks its good news that it is to re-open.” Other supporters who have backed the take-over include MP Helen Whately, whois pictured out- side the pub sharing ideas when the project first came about last year.
