‘Pre-Spring Guide & Whats UP!

Sonoma County, CA. ~ For some of us, it is hard to imag- ine a home without books, but local teachers tell us this is the case for many of their students. Low-income children have ac- cess to approximately one title per 300 children,

compared

to middle-income neighbor- hoods that have access to ap- proximately 13 titles per child. There is a direct correlation between the number of read- ing materials in the home and students’ proficiency scores in reading and math. United Way of the Wine Country and its Women’s Leadership Council work to tackle this inequality in our community through the Chil- dren’s Book Drive presented by the United Way Women’s Leadership the

Council. During entire month of March,

United Way will collect new and gently used English, Span- ish, and bilingual

children’s

books in order to make a dif- ference in the lives of children in our community – and they need your help! You can sup- port the book drive by donating
