spirituality MentalMakeoverMonth In my classes, as well as with my friends, I’ve gotten famous for telling people

“That is a terrible affirmation,” in response to many of the things that I hear people say. And, at this particular time in our country and the world “out there,” I certainly do hear a lot of them. I cannot count how many people I’ve heard say, or I’ve seen written, some dire words about “The next four years” and in my mind I think to myself, “That may be true for you, but not for me.” We must be very careful what we agree to, even mentally, because what we agree with, we are creating for ourselves. Our words are prophesying our own future. Just as there are no idle thoughts, there are no idle agreements. Even if your candidate was elected, or you don’t care about such things at all,

there is still the temptation to give in to fearful thoughts about the violence in the world, divisiveness in the culture, or even thoughts about your own health, job or family members. We scare ourselves by aligning with the voices of the media, or even fearful talk around the proverbial water cooler. This is why every now and then with my groups and clients, I like to do a

month of what I call a “Mental Makeover” in which we work on cleaning up our thinking and words. This is a perfect time to work on our mind, mouth, moods and attitudes. It means being responsible for what we read, what we watch on TV, the movies we see and the conversations we get involved in. Remember, there is no such thing as “casual conversation,” every word we speak is creating our future and our perceptions of life and the world we see. Our words either activate peace or fear in us. It becomes a time of cleaning up our conscious-

ness; we fast from fear and feast on peace and joy. That also means 30 days of “No complaining!” It is very important not to argue for our limitations or for the limitations of others. It’s not enough that we

not see ourselves as victims of the world we see, but, that we also not make the mistake of seeing other people as the victims of the world we see. We can help others in many different ways and yet still not see them as helpless victims. The world out there is always doing what it does and other people are always doing what they do. We cannot control the world, but we can guide our own thinking and perceptions, if we are willing to do the daily work of training our mind. To join March Mental Makeover Month, begin by looking to see if you’ve

been terrifying or tormenting yourself lately. Look to see what thoughts or ideas no longer serve you and sweep them off the porch of your mind. You can write them down and then surrender them to spirit or the universe, by shredding or burning them. Then…And this is the most important part of all, write down what you do

want to feel and think during these next 30 days. Stating what you do not want is only a small part of the process. You must have a positive goal to replace the old thoughts. It’s like setting the GPS navigational system in your car. You are the programmer, you must choose a direction and destination in order to start the energy flowing that way. Ultimately, it is not the world that really affects us most, but our thoughts
