In Stitches _ _ _
It’s been a lovely two months of Winter since the last issue, and I have started looking forward to enjoying some of the fantastic fairs and craft shows coming our way. The first one of the year for me was at the Event City in Manchester, Stitching, Sewing and Hobbycrafts Show, which will return in September was filled with everything you might need for your dressmaking from fabrics to haberdashery. The event showcased some of the finest work produced recently by The Embroiders Guild.
The Embroiders Guild are a nationally run organisation focussing in the art of hand stitching. There are literally hundreds of groups all over the UK which welcome all abilities. The closest branch to us in in Fallowfield, they meet regularly on the 1st of the month. They will be exhibiting their next work at Tatton Mansion from 25th March until the 30thJuly. The display is titled Gardens and Landscapes of Tatton, which if you’ve been to Tatton Park can imagine will be a beautiful display.
costumes and boast one of the largest collections in the UK. A fan of his work, I was able to catch the fantastic Dior display a while ago. Currently
on display is Mary Quant: Fashion Icon. Quant’s designs were popular in the 60’s and 70’s and I do often see her style returning, particularly the Chelsea look. Her tunics and short pleated skirts were worn by models such as Twiggy who we may associate with her 60’s look. The museum is hidden and often missed but is well worth a visit.
Another place I will be taking a trip to is the Macclesfield Silk Museum. The courses there can teach you “how to draw with your sewing machine”, which involves the art of machine embroidery. Then there is The Story of Silk Day on Saturday 1st April at which you can learn all about silks from the medieval period to when it begun being produced at the Macclesfield Mills. The day includes a workshop and finishes off with a tour of the Paradise Mill and Silk Museum. You have the chance to see some of the textile collections usually hidden away in storage.
I will of course be popping into local craft fairs, people have taken to sewing so well, and I love to see their wonderful skills. Have a look around and take the opportunity to visit these places. Do let me know what I’ve missed.
Still in Fallowfield, in Platt Hall based in the Gardens of Platt Fields Park, you can take a visit to the wonderful Gallery of Costume, which displays wonderful work produced by some of the finest designers. They house over 200,000
