Massive schools increase needed

KENT County Council has been doing its sums to create more than 23,000 extra school places over the next five years to meet growing de- mand caused by house-building and a rising birth rate. Roger Gough, pictured, the au- thority’s cabinet member for educa- tion, outlined the scale of the problem, with demand for school places rising for the last five years. Headded: “As demand continues

to grow, Kent is working hard to make the places available for more than 23,000 primary and secondary extra children who will need school places over the next five years in Kent. “Of these, 15,700 are for second-

ary school places and almost 8,000 for primary.” The county council says as a con- sequence of house building, more people moving to the area, and a ris- ing birth rate, Kent will need 37new primary and 10 new secondary schools by 2022. Since 2010, the county council has extended 89 primary schools (seven in Maidstone) and 39 secondary schools (three in Maidstone). In its latest Commissioning Plan for Edu- cation Provision, it highlights a need

in Maidstone for: 2017/18 - 60 tem- porary reception year places in Maidstone North, a 210-place ex- pansion of Headcorn Primary School, 30 temporary reception year places in MaidstoneWest or a 210- place expansion of Jubilee Primary School at Fant. By 2018/19 - A new 420-place

school in Maidstone North, 140 place expansion of Marden Primary School and a 210 place expansion of Harrietsham Primary School. By 2019/20 - A new 420 place

school in Hermitage Lane, Barming. Cllr Gough said: “As the school

age population continues to grow, we will plan for and respond to this demand and ensure where possible that parental preference is met.”
