“Like I said,” Craig smiled, “everyone lies.” “What if it’s really her?” Gary was horrified.


“You can have a cosy cuppa and reminisce about dead flies’ graveyard,” Craig laughed. “It’ll be fine.”


“It won’t be.” Gary put his head in his hands. “Aren’t there laws about dating dinner ladies?”


The computer made a gentle ping. Gary read the screen.


“She’s just cancelled on me,” he sighed with relief. “Says she’s got to work.”


“Looks like you’ve dodged a bullet,” Craig said. “Delete your profile before she tries to reschedule.”


Meanwhile, across town, Brenda Buttons, niece and namesake of the formidable former dinner lady, was cutting the ribbon to open a new supermarket, and wondering whether her budding career as a Kate Middleton lookalike was beginning to get in the way of her love life.
