Flats offered to needy veterans

ROYAL British Legion Industries (RBLI) is seeking wounded, in- jured and sick veterans to make theirhomesin its specialised apart- ments at Aylesford, which are nearing completion. The flats, which are being built in

two blocks on former allotments at Hermitage Lane, close to the Royal British Legion Village, are intended for ex-servicemen and women who are homeless, at risk of homeless- ness or have special requirements due to health issues. The project to provide homes for wounded soldiers began in 2015, when RBLI was awarded £1.95mil- lion from the Armed Forces Covenant LIBOR Fund. This followed the revelation in

2013 that one in 10 of the UK’s homeless population has a connec-

tion with the armed services. RBLI’s head of estates develop-

ment, James Mulroy, said the 24 apartments are an exciting opportu- nity to support veterans on the verge of homelessness back to inde- pendent living.Manyof them suffer with a disability or health condition. He added: “RBLI already pro-

vides specialised nursing and ac- commodation in the village to those who need it. However these apart- ments will provide accommodation to veterans who, although not in need of care, may need specialised facilities to help them lead produc- tive, mobile and active lives follow- ing the end of their service. For more details about the apart-

ments, call Emma Cottee on 01622 795910 or send her an email at emma.cottee@rbli.co.uk.

Vow to make junction safer

HIGHWAYS chief Matthew Balfour has promised to improve a junc- tion at Eccles branded “an accidentwaiting to happen”. At a public meeting called by The Bull Lane Safety Group and at- tended by interested parties including MP Tracey Crouch, the county’s cabinet member for trans- port told concerned road users: “Having come here tonight I have realised what I am up against and promise we will do something.” However, Cllr Bal-

four said a solution could be someway off. Road-users say a roundabout or traffic lights at the Bull Lane junc-

tion with the PilgrimsWay could help, or raising the junction to im- prove visibility. The safety issueshave been highlighted by the action group, which

has also handed a 1,106-signature petition to the county council. Campaigners say the road has becoming increasingly busy since

the Peters Village development began and, on average, one car passes the junction every 3.6 seconds at peak times, even with many

Parking plan at Papa’s chippie PAPA’S fish and chip restaurant at Ditton has applied for more parking in a bid to stop cars using the grass verge at the front of the London Road restaurant and take-away at peak times. The award-winning chippie has submitted plans to Tonbridge and Malling Council to increase the spaces from 22 to 35, using land behind the restaurant.
