Mother’s death ‘failure of trust’
THE death of Offham Primary School teacher Frances Cappuc- ciniwas a result of failures, inad- equate diagnosis and treatment, a coroner has ruled. Nicknamed Mrs Coffee by her pupils, the 30-year-old mum suf- fered heavy bleeding after a cardiac arrest at Pembury Hospi- tal. She had just given birth to her second son, Gia- como, by Cae- sarean section.
A10-day inquest into her death on October 9, 2012, heard from a num- ber of staff from Maidstone andTun- bridgeWells Trust and experts. Coroner Roger Hatch concluded
that the Caesarean was not carried out with care and a piece of placenta should not have been left behind. This led to the events which cost her life, he said. He also criticised the management of fluid levels. Following the inquest, Mrs Cap- puccini’s husbandTomand her fam- ily said in a statement: “Frankiewas
a wonderful wife, mother, daughter and sister. She was bubbly, intelli- gent, beautiful, loving and much loved.
“Failures of Maidstone and Tun-
bridge Wells NHS Trust and those employed by the Trust cost Frankie her life. Nothing can heal that pain. At least today, after four years, the truth is acknowledged.” Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospital Trust offered “sincere apologies” to Mrs Cappuccini’s fam- ily and said changes had been made. It said: “The trust has recognised
from the start that therewere aspects of Frances’ care that fell short of the standards that the trust would ex- pect andwe wish to once again sin- cerely apologise to the family for
this. The trust will carefully consider all of the evidence heard at the in- quest to ensure that any necessary changes which have not already been made are fully addressed.” The trustwas cleared of corporate manslaughter in January 2015 for her death and charges of gross neg- ligence against anaesthetist Errol Cornishwere dropped.
downsmail.co.uk Putting heritage in the picture
DITTON Heritage Centre can now display photographs showing life in the area in bygone days, thanks to a gift of nearly £1,000. The money came fromKent County Cllr Peter Homewood’s member
grant and will pay for the enlarging and framing of pictures donated by residents. The heritage
centremoved into the 1893-built Ditton CE Junior School after it was left vacant when the school moved to new premises nearby in New Road more than 25 years ago. Opened in September 2014, the centre is run by volunteers and holds
a wide range of displays and artefacts. Part of the building has been restored as a Victorian classroom and hosts visits from schoolchildren. Images which will go on show thanks to the £945 grant, include some
of children outside the school in the 1800s. For details of the centre’s open days, call 01732 840937.
