17,000 shoebox gifts are sorted from town base
THE former China Chaps building at Holborough Road, Snodland, was home for the Blythswood Shoebox Appeal. The scheme saw 17,000 shoe-
boxes of gifts sent to orphanages, old people's centres and churches in the poorest regions of Serbia and Romania. The shoeboxes included toys, confectionery, stationery, soaps, candles, scarves and knitwear from all over the south east of England.
Blythswood Care is a charity started in 1966, which gives help to communities and individuals at home and abroad. Antony Jeffries said the south
east region plays an important part in the scheme, but has no base from which to operate for the crucial two months that the shoe- box appeal runs for. He thanked the owners of the building and added: "The property proved to be the perfect space, with plenty of room for our volun- teers to check and sort more than 17,000 donated shoeboxes which were then packed into large

freight cartons. "Being in central Snodland had
so many advantages, and we were able to support and get to know many of the local busi- nesses. “We thank all those locals who came and helped volunteer, with
a special mention to Lynne Smith who came every day, and her hus- band, Vic, who provided invalu- able support." Three articulated lorries were dispatched from Snodland with the shoeboxes, medical supplies and knitted woollen blankets.
Helping hand
grants agreed THE Snodland Partnership granted a number of requests for financial assistance at its last meeting. The Devonshire Rooms Pre- School asked for funding for out- door play equipment for the children and the partnership agreed to pay £835. A donation of £2,800 was
made to Snodland Town Foot- ball Club towards the £3,100 cost of two retractable ball stop nets to be erected behind each of the goals when a match is being played. These will prevent the ball being kicked into the cemetery and the bowls club car park.
Snodland Town Council is to provide disabled access to the first floor of the council building inWaghorn Road by installing a lift and carrying out associated building work. This will enable less mobile people to gain ac- cess to the Moyeuvre-Grand Suite. The cost of the project is £22,895. A contribution has been made by Kent County Councillor, Sarah Hohler, and the partner- ship agreed to donate £5,000.
