24 hours of acts lined up for a charity ‘musithon’
A FULL programme has been lined up for Snodland's Got Stamina 24-hour Musithon on Fri- day and Saturday, March 10 and 11.
The event will raise funds for
the replacement community hall at Christ Church, Malling Road, Snodland. It starts at 10pm on Friday and
will run until 10pm on Saturday. As previously reported in Town Talk, the project team must raise £150,000 to replace the Victoria Room, known as "the tin hut". Jonathan Overell, a member of
the team, said: "There has been a tremendous response from hall users, and other local people, as
well as others from further afield. They will provide musical enter- tainment of all kinds, and we now have a full programme, making use of both the current hall and the church as performance spaces. "Now allweneedtomakethe
event go with a swing is an audi- ence, who are more than wel- come to attend all performances from 8am onwards on Saturday. Our performers will be seeking sponsors and there will be an op- portunity to donate to the hall fund at the event. "Refreshments will be available
all day and light lunches will be served, with all proceeds going
to the fund." Performers span the ages, from toddlers upwards, and the pro- gramme includes folk music, tap dancing, organ, piano and cello recitals, choralmusic, fitness and aerobic routines, a rock and pop band, brass music and songs from the musicals. Amarathon test formum
A SNODLAND mother whose daughter has completed the Lon- don Marathon twice is tackling the 26.2-mile course herself in April. Lorraine Shepheard, of Queens
Road, who has five children, used to run when she was a nurse. She kept fit afterwards by walking, but decided to start running again at the beginning of last year. She then decided she wanted to complete the marathon before she was 55 years old. Her daughter, Sarah, is not running this year. Lorraine is collecting for two charities: the Heart of Kent Hospice via her Facebook and Just Giving account and All Saints’ Church "which needs somuch money". There are sponsorship forms available at her house, 17 Queens Road; the Monks Head, Constitu- tion Hill, where her husband, Doug, works and Christ Church, Malling Road.
Sporting pair’s diamond anniversary
A COUPLE who met 64 years ago and have been involved in sport since they were at primary school have celebrated their di- amond wedding anniversary. Bill and Pat Robinson of Wyvern Close, Snodland,met in 1953. Bill joined the RAF the fol- lowing year for five years and they married in 1956 at West Kingsdown church. Pat said: “Bill was supposed
to be going to Cyprus, but there were too many for the draft and
anybody under 21 and married had to drop out.” They have lived around
Ryarsh and Snodland for most of their married life, and have a daughter, Toni, and a son,Dean, who lives in Australia. Pat added: "We have always
been involved in sport.We both play bowls still and Bill, a keen walker, plays golf every week.” They celebrated their dia-
mond day with ameal for family and friends at the Vineyard
Restaurant,Wrotham Heath. Pat lived in West Kingsdown
when they met and Bill lived in Ryarsh. He played cricket and football for West Kingsdown, the RAF, Ryarsh and Addington. He also started Mosquitoes FC. Pat used to do the scoring
when Bill played cricket and they both enjoyed playing darts. Bill was in the building trade, mainly in roofing, and also worked at Townsend Hook, Snodland.
School wins gold sports award
ST Katherine's Primary School, Snodland, has been presented with the Gold Award from Kent School Games in recognition of all the sports opportunities provided to the children. It is the highest award for primary school sport, and the school thanked everyone who was part of gaining the award. The school said in a statement: "To get the gold award we have offered sports clubs for more than 50% of pupils; we offer two time-tabled hours of PE a week; we have A, B and C competitive teams in football and netball; and 20% of pupils are involved in leading activities. "We aim to promote sports and activities to both pupils and parents; wemake links with outside teams and have inspirational athletes visit the school."
