Diamond Challengers
In January, we asked everyone to take on a DofE Diamond Challenge and we were absolutely blown away by the response! More than 14,000 people stepped forward, completing all sorts of challenges. Together they raised well over £1 million which will help even more young people to benefit from the DofE.
Challenges by well-known faces really helped to spread the word and encourage others to get involved. A group of celebrities kicked off the Challenge in Covent Garden, followed by an overnight camp on top of the O2 by Julia Bradbury and a daring wing walk by Phillip Schofield.
HRH The Countess of Wessex took the Challenge to another level in September – raising over £250,000 by cycling 445 miles from Edinburgh to London – inspiring many others to get involved along the way.
We Are DofE
A photo competition brought the year to a close, with over 1,300 entries from across the DofE family. The theme for the competition was ‘We Are DofE’ and entrants were asked to submit photos that convey what it means to them to be part of the DofE.
Onwards and Upwards
Our Anniversary year set many new records, showing us that the DofE is more relevant than ever before. 2016 saw a record quarter of a million young people begin their DofE journey, and over 120,000 young people achieved an Award. This year also saw the the highest ever number of Gold Awards achieved!
A special Gold Award Presentation hosted at Buckingham Palace in May, celebrated the achievements of more than 1,000 young people receiving their Gold DofE Award and over 1,300 Licensed Organisations receiving their plaques.
Presentations at Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland, Holyrood Palace in Scotland and St James’s Palace in London meant that a total of 8,137 Gold Awards were presented this year.
As our Diamond Ambition comes to fruition, we aim to see even more young people given the opportunity to achieve their own DofE Award in the future.
