Our Diamond Year Diamond Headlines

We really hit the headlines in 2016, kicking off our Anniversary year with a Covent Garden climbing challenge in January featured on Sky and Good Morning Britain. In March more good news followed when over four million viewers tuned in to watch The One Show feature the DofE, followed by an article in Hello! in June covering the DofE’s ‘Diamonds are Forever’ Gala.

In August, eight million viewers watched an episode of Countryfile which followed a group of DofE Leaders on their Diamond Challenge in Scotland. And in September, it seemed everyone wanted to know about HRH The Countess of Wessex’s Diamond Challenge, with BBC Breakfast, This Morning, ITV, Sky and BBC News all reporting on the epic week-long journey.

In November, our very special Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey was reported in many media publications including The Daily Mail, The Telegraph Online, The Daily Express and on the front page of The Times.

A whole year of media interest culminated in December, with ITV premiering a documentary hosted by Phillip Schofield called ‘When Phillip Met Prince Philip: 60 Years of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award’.

Royal Diamond Anniversary Tour

In this special year, HRH The Earl of Wessex travelled around every region and country in the UK to personally thank as many of the DofE family as possible. Across 54 locations, many of those who run and take part in the DofE met with HRH to discuss their DofE experiences and showcase their unique DofE communities.

The Earl participated in rowing, cycling, archery and trekking, while participants demonstrated different skill sets, attracting lots of regional media interest and creating life-long memories for everyone involved.

We’d also like to extend our sincere thanks to the offices of TRH for their help in facilitating all of our royal engagements and communications across the year – we could not have done this without your support.

Pots of Gold

A key part of the Anniversary celebrations was the focus on our Diamond Ambition and the increased need for support to help us bring the DofE to even more young people. An astounding £5m was raised for our Diamond Anniversary fund from donations, appeals and events such as special fundraising dinners, lunches, golf days and, of course, the outstanding ‘Diamonds are Forever’ Gala.

We send our utmost thanks to our Diamond Supporters and Committees – whose hard work ensured our events were top-notch – and to all of our guests, who made these events such a special part of our Anniversary celebrations.
