CIVIL MEDIATION COUNCIL

SESSION SUMMARIES Widening the use of mediation in the workplace

Sir Brendan Barber, Chairman, Acas

Sir Brendan will touch on the key principles which underpin the successful use of mediation in workplace disputes and take a realistic look at those circumstances where it may genuinely not be the best option to offer. He will review the stumbling blocks which stakeholders may encounter in pushing for wider take-up of mediation within the business and will conclude with consideration of latest thinking and next steps in the adoption of dispute resolution as a strategic corporate priority.

Workplace conflict interactive session with audience polling

Professor Paul Latreille, Professor of Management and Deputy Vice-President (Education), The University of Sheffield

This highly interactive session encourages delegates to share (anonymously using an audience polling system) their own organisations’ experiences of and approaches to workplace conflict. In particular, the session will explore the nature, causes and impact of conflict, its management/resolution, and barriers to change. In doing so, it provides contextual data for later sessions during the workshop and the opportunity for delegates to gain perspectives from a broader range of organisations and from the research evidence.

Introducing Mediation at Sony. The Journey so far ....

Mark Clements, Regional Head of HR, UK and Ireland, Sony Europe Limited

Mark will share his experience of becoming a qualified Workplace Mediator and the ‘unlearning’ that this involved. He will explain how mediation was introduced subtly in the background and incorporated into disciplinary and grievance policies. Mark will talk about the positive results achieved so far including in non-formal mediation discussions such as exit settlements. He will also share his future ideas for embedding mediation further into Sony’s DNA in the UK and the potential to roll this out further across the rest of Sony Europe.
