CIVIL MEDIATION COUNCIL

WELCOME

Welcome to the beautiful Old Library at Lloyds of London for our CMC event Save Time, Save Money, Save Stress. Sir Alan Ward (Chairman of the CMC) and I are delighted that so many people can attend.

Over the last decade it has been my experience that while many people appreciate the

benefits of mediation in the abstract, rather fewer have experienced a mediation or have been able to convince their employers to use it as an integrated part of their conflict resolution portfolio.

Certainly, mediation has been gaining traction for addressing workplace disputes but it is doing so much more slowly than many HR and Legal teams would desire, hence this conference. It is the CMC’s view that as more employers and employees can be shown that mediation will indeed Save Time, Save Money and Save Stress, that progress will accelerate for the benefit of all concerned.

Given the positive benefits of mediation on the one hand and the damaging effects of disputes on the other, the obvious question for now has to be “What is preventing mediation being the default remedy for workplace conflict?” Five or ten years ago the answer would have been a simple lack of understanding but now I think it lies more in corporate inertia, the comfort of familiar grievance procedures (even if they are not all that effective in producing actual rather than legal resolutions) and an uncertainty on the part of some Legal, HR and other business stakeholders as to how to “sell” the process to still-sceptical employees, line managers and Boards. So this is not just another conference about what mediation is and how it works – instead we aim to provide you with the arguments and strategies in favour of adoption of mediation in your workplace, and the confidence to anticipate and address any resistance you may encounter. To give delegates the broadest picture of the issues we have assembled a range of speakers and panellists with hands-on experience of introducing dispute resolution schemes into businesses and using workplace mediation as part of formal internal processes. Our speakers cover a range of sectors: health, retail, electronics, broadcasting, unionised and non-unionised, where mediation has been successfully introduced and where that journey is only just starting. We are confident that there will be something for everyone. Our thanks to CMC’s Workplace and Employment group, CMC’s Board of Directors and

Iconic Publications, our UK Mediation Journal partners for designing and producing this brochure. We must end with our sincere thanks also to all those of you who have marketed this event to your colleagues, friends and clients, so thank you for your support and for joining us here today.
