Highlights from the day:

• 1871 founder Howard Tullman stressed the need for speed in innovation and the importance in understanding how communication is evolving.

IC BUS INNOVATION SUMMIT TAKES THE BUS INDUSTRY ONE STOP CLOSER TO THE FUTURE.

On Wednesday, February 22, IC Bus hosted a cross-section of thought leaders from within the school bus transportation industry and beyond for a first-of-its-kind event. “The Next Stop Innovation Summit” was held at 1871, Chicago’s Center for Technology and Entrepreneurship. The goal of the event was to understand current market trends and challenges and begin mapping out the future of the school bus industry, which impacts the lives of millions.

“We heard a broad range of imaginative and thought- provoking ideas on what the school bus industry could look like over the next decade at the Innovation Summit,” said Trish Reed, Vice President & General Manager, IC Bus. “[It] served to facilitate ongoing dialogue with all the stakeholders in pupil transportation—parents, students,

customers and transportation partners alike—to collectively chart the future of the yellow school bus and its important role in educating our children.” Fueled by diverse points of view, the event proved to spark robust discussion around a number of important topics.

From the beginning to the end of the day, the subject of data was dominant. How can data be better utilized? How can we better harness and analyze the masses of data out there today? How do we protect privacy?

The day was wrapped up with some inspiring words from Howard Putnam, former CEO of Southwest Airlines, reminding us that “some play the game, while others change the way the game is played.”

With the leadership of IC Bus, the dialogue and interchange of knowledge that transpired took us all a step closer to where we need to be. It was clear, that we are stronger together.

• The expanded role of the connected bus was explored, considering its potential as an extension of the classroom, including the cost and security management of Wi-Fi enabled buses.

• The pros and cons of current and future fuel sources were debated, from electric to propane to gasoline, concluding that the future would include multiple forms of power and be less singularly focused than in the past.

• The influence of technology and trends in urban development were discussed, taking into account how those factors will affect routing for efficiency.

• A diverse panel talked about the potential of autonomous vehicle technology and what role it may have in the future school bus industry.
