at our cost. We are currently in the process of converting to all propane, “ said Lori Dusenberry, transportation supervisor for Muscatine Community School District in Iowa. Te district currently operates five propane school buses and is in the process of converting their fleet to propane autogas due to the “better fuel mileage, lower fuel cost, quieter engine and way less maintenance,” Dusenberry added. Although propane autogas represented the majority of survey
responses at 68 percent, Ronald Hill, transportation director of Sacramento City Unified School District in California, reported the use of clean air and alternative-fuel grants to offset the purchase of 20 CNG and electric school buses. Hill said the service received from the supplier is what has been expected. Yet he added that he remains unsure if he will continue to choose the same alternative fuel systems when replacement time comes, indicating that even in grant-rich states like California that student transporters are weary about future funding for alternative fuels. Meanwhile, 27 percent of survey participants said they operate CNG buses, 8 percent reported a mixed fleet of at least two different alternative-fuel sources and 5 percent have adopted electric. ●
