Alternative-Fuel Performance, Bus Service for Charter Schools

Te following comments are taken from this month’s School Transportation

News survey. Te first two comments voice concerns over performance of today’s alternative fuels in terms of mpg and range, and the third explains current service for district charter schools and school of choice transportation. Read more about alternative fuel systems from the survey in “Trends” on page 16 and 17 and stay tuned for articles on charter schools.

“(CNG) range is not good enough, not enough infrastructure (lack of fueling stations), very expensive maintenance costs (replacing CNG tanks, electronics/computers), not enough power on hills, etc.” -Neal Abramson, Director of Transportation Santa Monica (California) Unified School District

“Power and mpg (of propane) is much lower than desired. We hope the

new models and manufacturer improvements perform better.” -Matt Bryant, Director of Transportation Poudre School DIstrict in Fort Collins, Colorado

“We have school choice who go to an eligible stop and ride to the school they attend. We transport Charters on activity/field trips. We don’t do daily routes for charters because they are not neighborhood schools with students coming from all areas of the county. Teir bus length of ride and cost pro- hibits this service.” -Wayne Reese, Director Cache & Logan School Districts in Logan, Utah

For the Record

“Proper Placement” on page 46 in March provides incorrect informa- tion on Q’Straint’s National Training Seminar. Registration opens this month, with the event held Oct. 3 and 4 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
