“U.S. House Bill Would Fund School Bus Tree-Point Seat Belts”

stnonline.com/go/97

Keep in mind that the driver is responsible for all those kids to use the belts correctly. It would take so much more time to make sure of that and then your kids would need to be at the bus stop a whole lot earlier to ac- commodate that function. Additionally, it would take so much more time to get them home. So maybe having a heart to heat talk with your kids telling them how important it is to stay in one seat when they are on the bus. As a retired bus driver, I can tell you that the biggest problem bus drivers have on their buses is keeping the kids in their seats. Seat belts can also be used as a weapon. If you want to know, ride a school bus. I’m sure every school district in this country would appreciate having a parent on every bus for every run the drivers make to assure that all the kids stay in their seats.

—Jill Jackson Former School Bus Driver at North Clackamas School District EDITOR’S NOTE: The above comment was in response to an article “Share” via Facebook by Lisa Altman-Loring.

Would the bill also pay for aides on buses to make sure that students fasten as well as keep them fastened? You will be taking a 30- to 45- minute bus route and turning it into over an hour, waiting for students to fasten their seat belts at each stop (buses don’t move now until everyone is seated). Preschool through first grade would be the hardest to get them to comply. Tere are a lot of unknowns with this bill. First and fore most what happens in the event of an accident and some of the students are not belted? Are the districts and drivers going to be held liable? How long will a students have to hang if the bus rolls over on its side or top? I’m not saying I’m against seat belts, but these are just some the questions that will come up.
