REDONDO BEACH — The Marina del Rey and King Harbor boating communities will come together once again May 28-29 to sail in the annual Corinthian Cup hosted by Redondo Beach and South Coast Corinthian yacht clubs. The clubs have been co-hosting the event for more than two decades in an effort
to bring sailors together on the water. For two days colorful spinnakers and billowing sails will fi ll local waters as more than 20 vessels race to the fi nish line in King Harbor and Marina del Rey. There are three race classes: PHRF, Cruisers 30 feet and under, and Cruisers over 30
feet. Leg One starts at 1 p.m., on May 28 just outside the Marina del Rey breakwater
with the fi nish at the King Harbor breakwater. Racers are invited to dock in the harbor and enjoy dinner at Redondo Beach YC. The event continues on May 29 with Leg Two as sailors race from just outside King
Harbor to fi nish inside the breakwater at Marina del Rey. The day concludes with a light dinner and trophy presentation at South Coast Corinthian YC. To register for The Corinthian Cup or for more information visit

Sailing Spotlight on Cameron MacLaren
BCYC Sailing Director discusses Junior Mariners Program, special registration price offered to The Log readers.
NEWPORT BEACH — With summer only a few weeks away now is the time to plan how to spend those warm school-free days and Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club has the perfect solution. The Junior Mariners class is Bahia Corinthian YC’s newest program open to members and non-member children
from 10-17 years of age. The Log spoke with Bahia
Corinthian YC’s Sailing Director Cameron MacLaren to fi nd out more about the course that is geared towards junior sailors who are interested in the lifestyle of a mariner beyond racing. Course curriculum will include des- tination sailing, navigation and ori- enteering, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, model boat building, knot- tying, splicing, powerboat handling, STEM education and more.
What is the Junior Mariners Program?
Cameron MacLaren
Over the course of my career in youth sailing, I’ve recognized a need for pro- gramming outside the realm of compe- tition. There are lots of kids who simply don’t want to race, but rather focus on the variety of different aspects of sea- manship. There are also kids who are looking to get into sailing at an older age, but aren’t thrilled about the idea of joining the Novice class with 8-9 year olds. The Junior Mariners class pro- vides an avenue for these kids to enjoy the benefi ts of this lifelong sport. The class offers a multitude of

activities centered around the skills and lifestyle of a water- man. They have access to several different sailboats, including both dinghies and keelboats, as well as kayaks and power- boats. Instructors also incorporate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education where kids explore the con- cepts from on the water in a classroom setting, such as buoyancy experi- ments. There are also several planned fi eld trips to places such as the Back Bay Science Center and the Nautical Museum.
What sets this program apart from other sailing programs?
This program is unique among yacht club programming in its recreational, all-inclusive, non-competitive approach to sailing. Although some other clubs offer a non-racing class, the broad curriculum and variety of activi- ties included in the Junior Mariners class at Bahia Corinthian YC can’t be
