Wooden Boat Festival brings classic vessels to Newport Beach


Balboa Yacht Club to host the free annual event on June 4.


NEWPPORT BEACH — Wooden boat afi cionados will once again have an opportunity to spend a day admir- ing classic makes and models during the third annual Balboa Yacht Club Wooden Boat Festival, June 4. Experienced boaters as well as novices will come


together to enjoy a day fi lled with maritime craftsman- ship during the event scheduled from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Balboa YC, 1601 Bayside Drive. Up to 50 of the “most unique wooden power and sailboats in the country” will be on display both on the landside and in the water, according to the event’s organizers. A featured attraction at this year’s event will be Wild Goose, once the pride and joy of actor John Wayne,


who converted the former WWII mine sweeper in to a 136-foot pleasure yacht. Also not to be missed will be the 55-foot, 40-ton authentic Chinese junk boat, Mei Wen Ti. An awards ceremony to honor Best in


Show (Perpetual Trophy), Best Sailboat, Best Powerboat, Best Human-powered Boat and People’s Choice Award winners is scheduled for 4 p.m. Guests can enjoy art, exhibits, food


and drink, and live music during the show. There will also be a silent auction featuring donated art and items with proceeds benefi t- ting the Balboa YC Junior Sailing Program. Free shuttle service will be provided throughout the day, running constantly between the club and the free
