Sailboats will take over San Diego Bay once again as part of the 37th annual Beer Can Race Series. San Diego Beer Can Race series hits the water May 25
The summer series returns for its 37th year. SAN DIEGO — More than 120 boats are expected to participate in a local summer tradition that brings the boating community together for some friendly competition on the water. The Cortez Racing Association (CRA) and Silver
Gate Yacht Club will launch the 37th annual Beer Can Summer Series on May 25 on the Big Bay. Races will be held every Wednesday for 10 weeks. According to race organizers, the summer series is
“one of the largest annual sailing events in Southern California,” where more than 100 sailboats of varying sizes – from 24- to 60-feet – and handicaps taking to San Diego Bay each week throughout the summer. Races are scheduled to be held at 6 p.m. every
Wednesday. Spectators can watch the series from Harbor Island. Sailors from all over the county compete in 10
different classes, including multiple America’s Cup champion Dennis Conner. Everyone who’s ever been involved in competitive sailing in San Diego, includ-
ing international champions like J.J. Fetter, Peter Isler, Russell Coutts, and reigning America’s Cup champion James Spithill, has competed in the Beer Cans, according to race organizers. “The CRA Beer Can series is the highlight of the
San Diego sailing season,” said Conner. “There is something for everyone involved: good competition, interesting courses, family fun, and a great social event afterwards.” For race details and registration information visit

SAN DIEGO — Another Yachting Cup wrapped up on May 2 and, as always, this year’s regatta was full of character. The winds on May 1 were slower to
accelerate, starting at around 5 knots at 220. Luckily, they picked up to about 10 knots with gusts at 12 by the start of the second races. The wind was consis- tently shifting right all day, so many San Diego sailors were thankful to be back in their everyday conditions. The J/105, J/70 and Division A classes faced very tough competition, with the top racers only a few points apart throughout the whole weekend. Resolute, a J/125 owned by Tim Fuller, took fi rst place in Division A despite being down two crewmembers on Sunday. After Sunday’s races, competitors
gathered on the Sail Wash Lawn for the award ceremony where Commodore Doug Werner and Regatta Chair Julie Servais presented awards to class top fi nishers and the overall winner, Rival, a J/35 in Division C skippered by David Boatner. Rival fi nished Sunday with three bullets to overcome Dennis Conner’s (Menace XVII) excellent performance on Saturday and earned their spot on the Yachting Cup Overall Winner perpetual trophy.
