ing out of San Diego Bay and Mission Bay have usually been running 1.5-day trips to Punta Colnett most often fish- ing on Saturdays. Anglers looking for yellowtail along
the San Diego County coast continue to find a few nice sized yellowtail biting at La Jolla. The La Jolla area has also provided a chance at catching a nice sized white seabass. The ridge area outside of Del Mar is another area pro- ducing an occasional flurry of white seabass action. The bite on these species continues to be scratchy most days but when someone connects the result is usually a quality sized 20- to 30-pound white seabass or yellowtail. The water at La Jolla has been off
color in recent days and anglers are thinking the yellowtail bite will improve in a hurry once the water con- ditions clean up and stabilize. The best areas for a chance at a yellowtail have been while fishing the upper end of La Jolla outside of the MLPA closure zone located outside of the Cove and also while fishing further outside of the upper end of La Jolla at the kelp stringer hard bottom area known as Northwest. A good depth range for the yellowtail has been in 15 to 30 fathoms of water.
Live squid would be great bait for
the yellowtail and white seabass but it has been hard to catch. Some anglers have been trying the high grade of frozen squid in the absence of live squid. Live mackerel that is fished deep on a dropper loop rig has been work- ing for both white seabass and yellow- tail and yo-yoed iron also continues to produce an occasional yellowtail. On the offshore fishing front I
received a recent report from a very reliable source there were three sleeper marlin baited inside of San Clemente Island. Two were baited a short way above the Mackerel Bank and the other was seen a short way below the 289 Spot. The same skipper reporting about the marlin also reported having a report about a swordfish being seen at the Avalon Bank. The first day of spring is not far away and we are already experiencing spring like weather and spring like fishing. Keep on fishing and I hope to see you out on the water!

DFW lifts Dungeness crab health advisory
What’s Up?: The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) announced on Feb. 11 declining traces of domoic acid allowed the state agency to lift a health advisory for recreational Dungeness crab fisheries south of Pt. Reyes (Latitude 38° 00’ N).
Results from recent testing showed low
or undetectable traces of domoic acid in Dungeness crabs caught off the coast of Half Moon Bay, Monterey, Point Reyes and San Francisco, according to Karen Smith, a public health officer and director of the state’s Department of Public Health. State officials placed a health advisory on Dungeness and rock crab fisheries along the Central California coast on Dec. 31, 2015, impacting commercial fishers and recreational anglers in Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. A health advisory for Dungeness crab
remains in effect in state waters north of Latitude 38° 00’ N and rock crabs in state waters at Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel Islands and near Piedras Blancas Light Station in San Luis Obispo County. Domoic acid levels in crabs found in these areas are still high, according to DFW staff.
The Bottom line: More information about the health advisory and Dungeness crab fisheries, including what dishes to avoid using crab and best ways to reduce risk, can be found online at
cdph.ca.gov/Pages/NR16-007.aspx. The commercial Dungeness crab fish-
ery moratorium still remains in effect, according to news reports.
Fish and Game Commission announces new leadership
What’s Up?: A new year for the Fish and Game Commission means an entirely dif- ferent look for the stage agency governing outdoor matters. Eric Sklar and Jacque Hostler-Carmesin
were selected as president and vice presi- dent, respectively, of the commission on Feb. 10. The first commission meeting of 2016
features only one person on the dais who was also a commissioner at the start of 2015, as four commissioners left the board in the past few months. Commissioners Jack Baylis and Jim Kellogg ended their respective terms on the Fish and Game Commission at the end of 2015; Baylis did not seek a renewal of his appointment and Kellogg resigned. Also resigning as the commission’s executive director was Sonke Mastrup, who announced the end of his tenure in December 2015. The exodus of two commissioners and
executive director left the commission with three active members and interim staff liai- son on the dais, two of which were appoint- ed by Gov. Jerry Brown in June 2015. Michael Yuan is serving as acting execu-
tive director.
The Bottom line: Commissioners also made committee appointments at the Feb. 10 meeting in Sacramento. Sklar will serve as chair of the Marine Resources Committee and Williams will serve as the head of Wildlife Resources Committee; Hostler-Carmesin was elected chair of the Tribal Committee.
