Baja Fish Gear kicks off 2016 with the Long Beach Fred Hall Fishing Tackle and Boat Show
It seems like only yesterday founder Ed Tschernoscha began Baja Fish Gear in 2002. Ed originally planned to purchase East Cape Tackle in Los Barriles, BCS, Mexico, not far from the Van Wormer Resort in Las Palmas. When the deal fell through, with an accumulated garage full of inventory, Ed began looking in the South Bay area of L.A. for a place to start his business. After searching for almost a year, he found his location at 24607 Narbonne Ave. in Lomita, California – approximately 6 miles from L.A. Harbor and San Pedro, 6 miles from King Harbor in the Santa Monica Basin, not far from the Palos Verdes Peninsula and easy access of the 110 or 405 freeways. Being a long time fishing veteran from
the East Cape Resorts tournaments in Cabo, the Revillagegados in a private yacht, fishing off sailboats cruising up and down the coast of Mexico, Ed decided to specialize in what he knew best: tackle and knowledge of fishing Mexican waters. Ed brought in lures from Pacific Pro, the distributor of South African com- pany Williamson, prior to being sold to Normark (Rapala); Futa Lures from Hawaii; and Hi-5 Lures from Cabo San Lucas. Baja Fish Gear also bought what was left of
Proven Pattern Lures – adding to their custom lure capabilities. Over the years Baja Fish Gear has grown in size at its Lomita location making them the largest square foot retail fishing tackle store in L.A. County, with more than 4300 square feet of everything anyone would ever need for local, long range, or big game fishing. Baja Fish Gear’s website,
bajafishgear.com, not only provides mer- chandise for sale, but has several great links for Baja fishing reports and sea con- dition information for the private boater. Baja Fish Gear first appeared at the
Fred Hall Show in Long Beach 12 years ago with a small 10 x 10 booth. Their pres- ence steadily increased to their current 10 x 30 display. Besides a full selection of lures, skirts,
rods, reels, clothing, and fishing tackle, Baja Fish Gear prides itself on friendly, knowl- edgeable, and experienced staff. Their staff knows the latest trends and tricks of the trade from splices to techniques. Ed’s staff participates on long range charters with some of the best boats, captains, and crews San Diego has to offer – Royal Star, Red Rooster III and Intrepid, which range from five days to 10 days in length. sign-up specials on a Baja Fish Gear spon- sored charter. When it comes to tournaments, both club and International, Ed and Baja Fish Gear have been top winners, including First Place Overall in 2005 at the largest tuna money tournament in the world. In 2010, Ed and the Baja Fish Gear boat, King Fin, helped Silver Gate Yacht Club take the first place club trophy in the San Diego Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge, and took largest tuna in the big boat division this past year. Baja Fish Gear is a strong sup- porter and sponsor of many clubs and tournaments, including the Marina del Rey Halibut Derby, the King Harbor Marlin Tournament, the San Diego Make-A-Wish
Tuna Challenge, and the Western Outdoor News’ Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot Tournament. Stop by the Baja Fish Gear booth for
exclusive show specials and new product roll outs – including a waterproof reel bag on wheels that fits into most airline over- head compartments. There will also be other great show specials from rods and reels to everything terminal. Be sure and wear your Baja Fish Gear
T-shirt to the show and get other free prizes at the booth. For more information visit
