variable the kids were treated to a show by the local grey whale migration that did not disappoint, according to Regatta Chairman David Ross. “The weather was beautiful and the
show put on by the pod of whales both Saturday and Sunday did not disap- point,” Ross said. The top five racers for each race

Medicine Man sweeps LAYC Mid-Winter Catalina Island Race
LOS ANGELES — Racers were met with a foggy start as a thick marine layer stuck around for the first half of Los Angeles Yacht Club’s Mid-Winter Catalina Island Race earlier this month.
The wind filled nicely for the start and built to 12 knots by the West End of Catalina Island. Unfortunately, the wind did not hold up and died down at the back side of the island, and patch- es of light wind could be found throughout the course. The lead changed several times in
both PHRF A and PHRF B divisions, according to Los Angeles YC Commodore Carol Armitage. The battle between Zephyrus and
Medicine Man was not decided until the Los Angeles Harbor entrance. “As we neared Angels Gate, the wind

SCYA Midwinter Regatta. Eight VO 70 RC boats were entered for the 87th SCYA Midwinter Regatta that raced at Newport Dunes. The sailors all gath- ered for the noon start at Newport Dune and 11 races were conducted. The winds were wonderful and the competition was intense as the skip- pers all tuned their boats between races to maximize their chances of winning an SCYA trophy.
First place was awarded to Steve
Beck; Second place went to Larry Grant, who acted as the event coordi- nator. Third and fourth places went to Mike Schachter and Mike McCarthy, respectively. SCYA Vice Commodore Simon Dekker was pres- ent to award trophies and watch the action. Steve Ford is the builder of the boats and allowed people to try their luck at sailing extra boats he brought along so that future sailors could see what it was like to sail a radio con- trolled VO 70.
