Te Kansas Department of Educa- tion published its annual National School Bus Loading and Unloading Survey at the end of last year, reporting four students killed nationwide at school bus stops during the 2014-15 school year, the low- est figure since reporting began in 1970. Te survey results are compiled
through a collection of fatal crash records provided by state agencies responsible for student transportation safety. Only the incidents that involved students in or around the loading/unloading zone of a school bus were counted in the survey. Of the four fatalities, three were caused by illegal passing of a stopped school bus. Two of these occurred in Arkansas, one in Pennsylvania and the other in New Mexico. How- ever, this reporting includes not only loading zone are fatalities, but also those that happen on-board and as a student is walking to or from school. Another difference from the National National School Bus Loading and Unloading Survey is that this survey counts the fatalities per calendar year, as opposed to academic year.
