News BRIEFS In Memoriam: John Goss

John Goss, training specialist at Q’Straint, died Jan. 3 of pneumonia, the company confirmed. He was 84. Before joining the industry, Goss served in the U.S. Air Force, where he retired as chief master sergeant after serv-

ing in Vietnam. In 1974, when he became director of transportation and facilities at the Marana Unified School District just out-

side of Tucson, Arizona. He served in that capacity at Marana until retiring in 1989. After Goss left the school district, Q’Straint Director of Sales Jim Reaume offered him a contract job as the com-

pany’s first outside sales and technical expert. Te two had formed a close working relationship during Goss’ time as a transportation director. At Q’Straint, Goss helped develop the National Training Seminar, which the company called one of his most nota- ble accomplishments. To honor his contributions, Q’Straint said it will dedicate their training facility in his name. “John was an incredible man who was always eager to brainstorm innovative solutions to difficult cases. Whether he was designing a new kind of safety vest or trying to come up with another way to tie down a heavy wheelchair, he worked tirelessly to find a safe way to transport students with special needs,” said Sue Shutrump, supervisor of occu- pational therapy and physical therapy at the Trumbull County Educational Service Center in Ohio. Cheryl Wolf, a special needs transportation consultant and part of the TSD Tenured Faculty, also remembered

Goss fondly. “He was the first person I had ever heard talk about popping the roof hatch and let it act as a chimney to release the black toxic smoke from the bus. He was a wealth of information and a valued mentor to me,” she said, Goss is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janine, two sons, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. l
