DAY ITINERARY
I love Wight
A romantic adventure from North to South
The Isle of Wight is the ultimate romantic retreat, and a beautiful backdrop for your very own love story. Why not set the scene with a moonlit walk and then champagne in a shack overlooking the sea. Or stroll hand in hand through ancient woodlands where you can see baby red squirrels at play. These cute little creatures are known as ‘kittens’ and usually choose March to make an appearance.
MORNING Queen Victoria’s love nest by the sea
I Wight
You’ve seen the TV series. Now visit the Palace. Osborne is the setting for one of the greatest love stories of our time, between Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes. No, hang on. Between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Their union produced nine children in rapid succession, and their seaside palace on the Isle of Wight had an entire floor for the brood. The palace was designed by Albert in the Italianate style and overlooks the sea. Albert thought that the view resembled the Bay of Naples, and maybe it does, if you don’t look too closely at the striking Spinnaker Tower.
Lovers should take a stroll down to the Queen’s private beach and sit in the royal alcove overlooking the sea. Victoria came here to paint and relax with her passionate Prince.
Maybe Abdul Karim, joined her from time to time – he was the Queen’s favourite servant and his smouldering portaits can be seen in the Palace. A film about their close relationship comes out in 2017. Or perhaps she rested here a while with John Brown, her Highland ghillie, who moved from Balmoral to Osborne to comfort her after Albert’s premature death. Apparently he did such a good job of it that rumours still persist that they got married and had a child in secret.
Moving back onto safer territory, it’s a lovely walk down to the beach. And you can get a decent cup of coffee from a hut near Victoria’s bathing machine – or an ice cream, if you’re peckish.
