Outdoor Engineering If it comes back are you covered?
Even after remediation work, Japanese knotweed could return. Without the correct cover from insurance and warranties, the cost of its reappearance can easily spiral into hundreds of thousands.
When Japanese Knotweed Control began working with invasive plants as one of the UK’s original remediation firms, no such cover for this sector was available. This is why 14 years ago we built a bespoke policy with Lloyds of London and it is still unique to the industry today.
Japanese Knotweed Control was the first company in the industry to offer an insurance-backed warranty on all its treatment options. All work undertaken is fully insured and underwritten by Lloyds of London specifically for the treatment of non-native plant species, and carries professional indemnity cover for £5million including structural damage cover.
It is absolutely critical to have the right insurance and warranties in place when dealing with invasive species such as Japanese knotweed. Having proper insurance and warranties in place work ensures that the customer is protected should anything go wrong with the remediation works.
Lloyds of London said: “Our policy specifically covers JKC for the work undertaken for invasive weed management. It also provides cover to the risk of the unlikely event of any re-growth causing damage to property, through any negligence of JKC. After working with JKC for a number of years, we understand that the professional work they undertake minimises the risks of potential claims and are happy to provide this bespoke policy for them.”
The increasing proliferation of Japanese knotweed has led to an explosion of firms who claim expertise in the eradication of invasive species. A number of these firms do not have the knowledge, accreditations, insurances and warranties required and it is these cowboy contractors that are damaging the industry.
For this reason, it is more important than ever that, as a credible and established contractor, JKC is able to offer an independent insurance backed warranty to its customers.
The policy covers the warranty period of treatment works for up to 10 years and may be extended. The INNSA policy is offered as
an extension to our already comprehensive insurance package. If JKC were unable to meet its obligation to carry out any warranted work due to the business ceasing trading, then a claim can be made under the cover for works to be completed by an alternative approved contractor.
The right information and back-up from knotweed professionals, such as insurance and warranties, provides not only peace of mind but also the legal guarantee that solicitors and conveyancers are looking for to demonstrate the knotweed issue is under control.
Remediation firms need to be honest and transparent about their insurance and warranties so the customer fully understands the protection they have before agreeing the contract.
Clients need to be questioning contractors up front on what insurances and warranties remediation firms have before embarking on the project. A remediation firm may appear to be demonstrating value for money on the face of it, but without the right insurances and warranties the customer faces uncertainty and they could be lumped with huge costs remedying structural damage.
