Outdoor Engineering DuraKerb The Principle Designers Friend
How many products have been developed specifically to eliminate 2 of the biggest risks associated with its installation?
Amongst its many other benefits at less than 6kg’s and not containing carcinogenic silica, DuraKerb makes designing out risk simpler.
DESIGNING OUT RISK
By specifying DuraKerb on your project you are eliminating 2 forseeable health and safety risks as required by the CDM Regulations.
Risk 1: Manual Handling
The HSE recently commented on concrete kerb, “Regularly lifting, carrying or handling them can present significant risks of developing musculoskeletal problems.”
At less than 6kg’s DuraKerb is designed to be manually installed in line with HSE guidelines unlike the extremely heavy concrete equivalent that should be only installed with the use of expensive and problematic lifting equipment.
Risk 2: Respirable Crystalline Silica
The HSE have estimated that the number of deaths from lung cancer associated with the exposure to RCS (respirable crystalline silica) in the construction sector to be around 450 per year.
As DuraKerb is manufactured from a recycled blend of polymeric materials it does not contain silica which operatives can be exposed to during the cutting and installation of concrete products. DuraKerb can also be cut using a conventional hand saw eliminating the need for the use of potentially risky disc cutters and much of the required PPE.
TRIED AND TESTED
The multi award winning DuraKerb has had full Highways Agency and BBA/HAPAS approval since 2008 with over 400,000lm successfully installed across the UK. Rigorously tested both during development and post installation DuraKerb replaces the standard concrete kerb and their associated risks. Whilst DuraKerb might be new to you, it has the proven track record and independent accreditation to give you peace of mind.
COST EFFECTIVE
Given the speed and ease of installation of DuraKerb, it’s little wonder that Contractors report installation rates of 4 times that of traditional concrete kerb. The speed of installation combined with no requirement for expensive and problematic lifting equipment and the associated personnel make DuraKerb the cost effective, safer solution. Also due to its inherent lightweight nature, DuraKerb is much more cost effective to transport with up to 4 times as many units per load.
ENVIRONMENTAL
Manufactured from recycled material, DuraKerb has a 40% lower carbon footprint in manufacture than the concrete equivalent and due to its light weight, generates 73% less CO2e in transportation.
The material used in manufacture is a blend of recycled polymeric materials, usually plastic milk and detergent bottles. These are typically 182 plastic bottles in a standard HB2 unit. Using these low-grade waste materials ensures they do not end up in landfill. Every 100lm of DuraKerb can divert 0.5 tonnes of ‘waste’ from landfill.
