Housing and Health general

Maidstone Borough Council’s Housing and Health Team work in partnership with our health colleagues to address a spectrum of housing needs which in turn are affecting resident’s health. Partnerships have been formed with GP Surgeries, Hospital Discharge Teams and Health and Social CareWorkers to ensure people are living in suitable conditions and their health does not deteriorate due to poor housing conditions.

The team can assist with a range of issues from Disabled Facilities Grants (Home adaptions), to Home Inspections for general disrepair for both home

owners and those renting in the private sector.

Throughout the winter months we receive high volumes of damp and mould complaints across the borough. Upon inspection, many of these cases are due to lifestyle behaviours within the home and some small changes can help reduce the build-up of condensation.

If you think the condition of your home is affecting your health ask your GP to make a referral to us, or contact the team directly on 01622 602000 or

email housingandhealth@ maidstone.gov.uk

Members of the council’s Housing and Health Team have started to work more closely with our colleagues within Maidstone hospital, so that we can support our most vulnerable residents to return to a safe and suitable home after a hospital stay. We can work with people in any type of property, be it rented or owned.

One home we are currently involved with has a number of issues, such as out of date electrics, no fixed heating and a substantial amount of hoarding meaning much of the property is inaccessible. The property currently poses a risk to the occupants, neighbours and future carers. The team is working with a wide range of partners to ensure the resident is appropriately accommodated while the work is carried out to the property. We are working with the local community to ensure the house is cleared so that residents can return to their property knowing it is safe and warm.

We hope that b

with the hospital, we can help people return home and r incidents of readmission to hospital.
